The lower bolt holes in the original spindles are 7/16″ and the bracket and bolts 1/2″. The upper bolt holes on the original spindles are 1/2″ with the brackets and bolts being 5/8″. The difference between disc brake and drum brake spindles is at boss at the top where the bracket would mount. On drum brake spindles, this boss stuck out farther than disc brake spindles. We include standard organic brake pads, but the caliper can be upgraded with any D154 performance pad of your liking should you desire a bit more pad “bite”in your system. Also included in our kit are new brake fluid hoses, bearings, seals, dust caps, and all mounting hardware. This brake kit will add 8-1/2 inches overall to your straight axle’s center-to-center distance of your king pins. Meaning, if you are running a 48-inch axle, your overall width once installed will be 56-1/2 inches. This may be more or less than your current setup depending upon current brake package and wheel spacers. This kit requires a minimum of a 13-inch wheel; however, we recommend at least a 14-inch wheel with a 2.60-inch hub I.D. that is lug-centric for proper clearance. The caliper mounting brackets provided fit ’49-’54 Chevy car spindles are quite stout to prevent any caliper flex during hard braking. They are direct fit to these spindles but will not work with same year GM truck spindles. Machine work is required to resize the inner and outer bearing surfaces of the spindle pin, shorten the spindle pin, and rethread the retaining nut threads to properly use original spindles with this brake kit. An inner bearing and seal adapter will also be required to be welded in place to properly space the rotor. And if you do not have the means to machine and weld your original spindles for your project, or you do not have any original spindles that is not a problem either, as we offer a beautiful set of forged that include new king pins with installed bushings that are already modified for our brake kits to help you finish your project. Because the original GM steering arms will not work for a straight axle conversion you will need to update to one of our GM spindletoo, especially if you are using a drop axle, as aftermarket steering arms will save a lot of time and frustration in this regard. An Easy DIY Installation You Can Complete in Your Home Garage We have included everything you will need in our Chevy spindle straight axle disc brakes conversion kit, right down to the spindle nut with retainer and cotter pin, new bearings, brake hydraulic hoses, and more. I upgraded a t-bucket from spindle mount wheels to five lug rotors. The kit has all the little parts so you shouldnt have to scrounge much. Note that if your spindles are not already machined, I recommend purchasing Speedways already prepared ones. Since mine were already chromed and I have some machinist skills, I did my own. There is tig welding and routine lathe work. Everything was OK until time to thread the spindle for the wheel bearing nut. It is an oddball thread size, and the die to cut 3/4-20 thread can be hard to find. Otherwise, only normal common sense assembly results in very good brakes. If you buy new spindles, get the ones with fitted king pins and bushings. Cons: A Little Fitting To Make Pros: very complete kit Yes, I recommend this product. Disc brake kit Rated by gasserhotrods on March 13, 2014 Summary: This kit fits better than the Mustang 2 kit, but neither one is correct, I returned the Mustang 2 kit and had lots of conversation with Bill (one of your techs) and sent him pictures of the problem. The problem with the Mustang 2, kit is it does not follow the arc of the rotor, at one end the pad is completely on the rotor and at the other end the pad hangs off the rotor about 3/8″ you can verify this with Bill. The GM kit has a bigger pads and the callipar is 90 degree to the rotor so you do not have the arc issue but the pads hang off the rotor about 3/8″ also. My only complant is if I am buying a product like this I expect it to be correct and fit correctly. I think you should let customers know this up front that they do not fit correctly. I have bought several disc brake conversions kits over the years and never had this type of issue. I also think you should talk to your manufactures and see if they can correct the problems. Anyway that is my gripe of the day.
